Mad Woman in the Attic - Bertha Mason

In the novel Jane Eyre, character Bertha Mason appears from the beginning itself, but visible in fullest from only in the second half. She is characterized as an insane woman. She is the first wife of protagonist Rochester, but that marriage was  a failure. Bertha is the great tragedy of Rochester's life. She never loved her husband. She is the obstacle that Jane's and Rochester's love must overcome. She suffers from congenital insanity. She is also seen as a drunken. As a result of her insanity she spends most of her adult life locked in an attic. That's why she is known as 'Mad Woman in the Attic'. She crawled around in attic making animalistic noises and laughing in a creepy way. She destroyed Jane's wedding veil, when she figures out that Rochester and Jane were going to get married. She has fearful and ghastly look, with a discovered face. Her lips were swelled and dark, brow furrowed black eyebrows widely raised over the blood shot eyes. She is ultimately portrayed as a Vampire. In her peak of madness, she burnt Thorn field mansion, and committed suicide.
